You all know how much I love book tags! When I first came across Noor’s blog ‘Noor’s Place‘ she had recently posted this tag and I just had to give it a try! I think you can find out a lot about a person through what books they read and how they go about reading them, so here‘s me and my book obsession giving you more of a glimpse into my life.
1 | Do you have a certain place at home for reading?
My bed. I don’t think I read anywhere else. If I did I would get too distracted. I‘ve tried reading on the couch before but that just ends up with the TV being turned on haha. So yes curled up in my blankets, usually before bed or in the morning.
2 | Where do you like to read?
Same as question one, my bed. However I do also like reading on the bus lately. To and from work, as I usually go straight towards a computer these days when I’m at home. So I am trying to use my time wisely haha. If I’m comfortable enough at lunch or in a cafe I can also take a book out and read.
3 | Bookmark or random piece of paper?
Neither. I remember the page number and/or chapter number. I would never ever dog ear my pages. I don‘t really like the look of bookmarks (I’m a weirdo) if desperate I use paper. I have also been known that if someone yells for me and I have to leave the book suddenly, I will use what ever in sight. Meaning blankets, USB, water bottle, you name it!
4 | Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop at a chapter?
I can just stop reading but prefer finishing at a chapter as there’s more a proper end and conclusion. It is also easier to start back up again. However if I am on the bus and I’m about to miss my stop I will be able to stop half way through.
5 | Do you eat or drink while reading?
No. If I do it’s just some water to stay hydrated. Once I’m in the book zone I stay in the book zone. Food and drink would just distract me. Now since writing this question I’ve become EXTREMELY THIRSTY.
6 | E-reader or real book?
Real book always. While I can read blogs and watch videos on a computer for a while, actually reading a full on book would hurt my eyes way to much. Also I feel like it is dishonoring the book not reading it in it‘s meant to be state. Plus I love the smell and feel of the paper. Nothing beats it. My books are my baby’s.
7 | Music or television while reading?
Music, sometimes. I try to go without both. But if I am using the bus as my reading space and there are loud youths I will opt to play music. Nothing with too many words. Usually soundtracks/orchestra pieces. I then have to use the same song on repeat for the same book. For example I read ‘The book thief’ to the song ‘Better than that‘ by Lakyn. When I hear the song I remind myself of the book thief. So sometimes the music comes in handy and I create my own soundtrack for that book.
8 | One book at a time or several at once?
One at a time. My mind would get way to muddled if I tried reading more than a book at a time. Plus how can you immerse yourself into a story if you are reading more than one? A book gets my whole attention or nothing.
9 | Reading at home or everywhere?
Everywhere. Mainly at home, preferably at home. But everywhere is a possibility to read a book.
10 | Reading aloud or silently in your head?
I read silently. I like to read out loud only if I get stuck on a sentence and need to grasp the meaning of it better, then reading it out and sounding out the words help. Apart from that it’s all in my head.
11 | Fiction or non-fiction?
Fiction but I do love bio‘s (non-fiction) as well. It’s interesting learning about other people‘s journeys and at an age where it’s a whole lot of experience and bad things thrown at you, it’s great to hear other people’s real stories.
But then there is fiction and fantasy. Nothing beats it. A writer being able to create this whole new world (sings Aladdin) that you become consumed by. To create these characters that become so real, your new friends, enemies and family. To create these experiences in a fiction world but allow it to become so real you have these emotions is something I will never get over. I have laughed, cried and grieved alongside so many fictional characters and worlds and I just keep going out for more! haha
12 | Do you read ahead or skip pages?
Never. Ruins the point of the book in my opinion haha
13 | Break the spine or keep the book like new?
Keep it as new as possible! As I said before my books are my baby’s and I wouldn’t hurt them at all haha. I like keeping them in fab condition but they still look loved don’t you worry!
14 | Do you write in your books?
NO! Read the above answer haha!
15 | Your favourite book.
‘The Night Circus.’ by Erin Morgenstern
Now we could go on how Harry Potter changed my life, J.K is AMAZING. OR how I have read The Secret Garden more than any book since a kid. OR how the Hunger games and divergent series’ ate me up and consumed me till the end. OR how The Name of the Wind kept me going inside a world so unlike any I had read before. OR how The Simple Gift made me question how we should look at the world.
But The Night Circus. This book. Speechless. I always find it so hard to explain to people why I loved it so. Have you ever read a book, and it becomes so real that the actual reality around you feels fake?
“The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it… It is simply there, when yesterday it was not” It is said my multiple characters in the book that when you enter the circus it feels like a dream, you see, it is only open at night. But when you leave, the circus feels real and the reality the true dream. The same can be said in real life. I literally had an outer body experience where I finished a chapter closed the book and went out of my room and the real world felt slightly blurred and dream like, I had to run back and continue reading to feel real again.
I’ve never wanted something to exist more than this circus. You’ll have to just read it to believe it.
